Of course, these two roles can come into conflict and so designers need to balance these two roles to provide practical use as well as attractiveness at the same time.

A good bra can also help pregnant women which are a time when a mother-to-be develops enlarged breasts that are also more sensitive to touch and so they might need to use nursing bras that provide the right kind of support and which help with breast feeding as well. Of course, in the late sixties the liberated woman had taken to burning her bras and went about with jingling breasts to show how independent and liberated she was. This craze however did not affect every woman and in fact most women today continue to use these items of undergarment to properly support, conceal and protect their breasts.
